The team meeting was in the film room, with twenty-six players in folding chairs and Coach at the front.
I stood against the back wall with my clipboard, a foot from my stepfather.
He had come in a tie, and he did not look at me.
Jase sat in the front row with his elbows on his knees.
Zara's message still glowed on thirty phones, and nobody was whispering about anything else.
"This is a vote," Coach said. "Secret ballot, paper, one name. The man who gets the C wears it through the playoffs."
He held up a coffee can full of folded slips.
"Candidates are Whitaker and Tremblay. Hallie counted pledges for me."
Hallie, in the corner with her camera down, gave me a small miserable thumbs up.
"Fourteen for Tremblay," Coach said. "Eleven for Whitaker. It's a close room."
Fourteen.
He had it.
Everything he had spent six months and one fake girlfriend building was right there, ready to be handed to him in a coffee can.
"Before you vote," Rhett said.
