The film room was full by five to nine, and nobody was looking at the screen.

I stood at the back next to Hallie, my braid still damp from a shower I didn't remember taking.

Rhett sat alone on the far side with his arms crossed and his eyes on the floor.

My stepfather stood by the door in the same tie he'd worn to the vote.

Jase walked to the front of the room in his captain's jacket.

Coach nodded once and stepped aside.

"I'll say this in order," Jase said.

His voice shook, and he let it.

"Monday night, the kid threw the punch."

Every head turned to the rookie, who went the color of paper.

"I was ten feet away. I saw his hand. I saw Tremblay grab him and say it was him."

"Jase," the rookie whispered.

"And I said nothing," Jase said. "I watched a man take twelve fights and a review for something I could have fixed with my mouth."

Nobody breathed.

"That's not the worst of it. Not by a mile."

He looked straight at Rhett.

"In April I said something vile about my sister to Rhett, and he walked out on me for it."
