Chapter 10: Mine

He took me home with him that night.

Marlee had driven her father to the MacAskill house herself, with me in the back seat.

She had not said a word the whole way.

At the front door she turned and looked at us both.

"I'm sleeping at Mabel's," she said. "Don't make me hear anything."

"Marlee," he said.

"Tomorrow, Dad. I can't tonight."

She got back in her truck.

I watched her taillights down the drive.

Kellan stood on the porch with his hand on the screen door, and I saw him decide not to chase her.

"She's okay," I said.

"She's furious."

"She's furious and she's coming back. She said tomorrow."

"I know."

He opened the door.

I followed him into the kitchen where my wolf had woken up four days before.

He turned on the light over the stove and leaned both hands on the counter.

"Stay," he said, without looking at me.

"I'm not going anywhere."

"I need to say something first."

"Okay."

"I'm not going to say it well."

"That's okay too."

He breathed out through his nose.

"I knew you when you had braces," he said.

"I knew your mother and your father and the dog you had. I knew you when you cried over a boy named Tyler who didn't deserve it."

"And every part of me says that's the wrong man to be standing here wanting you like this."

"Does your wolf say that?"

"No."

"Does your heart?"

"Not that either." He turned. "It's my head. My head won't shut up. It says nineteen years, MacAskill. It says you're her father. It says Anne."

"Okay," I said. "My turn."

I walked over and stood in front of him.

I was twenty-two years old, barefoot on his kitchen floor, with my hair in a mess and my heart beating in my teeth.

"I'm twenty-two," I said. "I'm not a girl you taught to ride a bike."

"I'm a woman with a degree and a job offer and a pretty good sense of what I'm doing."

"I know you're forty-one. I know the math. I know Marlee. I've got no illusions about any of it."

"Everly."

"I'm not done. You think I'm too young to know what I want."

"I've known what I wanted since the second you handed me that bread. I've wanted it for four days. I'll want it in forty years."
