Chapter 18: Carried

I don't remember crossing the creek.

I remember the water pulling at my legs, and the smell of burnt hair.

I remember the chain lying across his black ribs with a thin white smoke rising off it.

I could not touch the links.

Silver burns a wolf's mouth to the bone.

So I took the leather grip at the end of it between my teeth, and I yanked.

The whole thing came off him in a long hissing slither that left a raw red stripe behind.

Kellan did not move.

I clamped my jaws in the scruff of his neck and dragged him.

He weighed as much as a truck.

I dragged him anyway, one step and then another, up the bank over the stones and the roots.

My pack roared behind me.

A gunshot cracked above the creek.

It was Mom, in her good boots and her diner apron, shooting over the Gannon heads with both barrels.

She was shouting words I had never heard her say.

The line on the far bank broke.

It went back into the dark in ragged pieces, and I did not look to see if Ridley went with them.

Marlee came out of the water at a run, human again and still wet, and got under his shoulders on the other side.

"Mom's got the truck on the logging road," she said, between her teeth. "Pull."
