Chapter 29: First Shift
"Tell Molloy I said so," Tate read out loud, in the middle of the plaza.
"I heard."
"He said I can skate."
"Forward only."
"Forward's for forwards," he said, and his voice broke right in the middle of it.
He skated that night at the practice rink, alone, at eight o'clock, with the summer sun still coming through the high windows.
I sat on the bench with my knees pulled up.
He stepped onto the ice and stood there.
Then he pushed off.
Forward. Slow. Two laps, both arms loose at his sides.
On the third lap he lifted his right hand off his hip and held it out flat.
Nothing hurt. I could see it on his face.
He came around past the bench and didn't stop. He just said, "Hi," going by, like a kid on a bike.
I cried the whole fourth lap and he pretended not to see.
The summer went fast.
In July the team's new general manager, a former defenseman with a bad knee and no ring, drove to Whitefish Bay himself.
He sat at Mom's kitchen table and offered Tate one year.
