Chapter 30: Match Day
I told Tate in the truck before he'd even started the engine.
No secrets. Not even a good one.
He listened with his hair still wet from the locker room shower.
"What do you want to do?" he said.
"You're not going to tell me?"
"Your career is yours. I shook on it." He started the truck. "I'll tell you what I think if you ask."
"I'm asking."
"I think you already know, and you want somebody to say it's okay."
I looked at the card in my hand.
"It's okay," he said.
On Monday morning I took the elevator to the owner's suite.
She was alone this time, no lawyers, with a cup of tea and the morning paper.
My picture from the big screen was on the front of the sports page. Me in his jersey, crying.
"I can't take it," I said.
She set her tea down.
"May I ask why, dear?"
"Because you signed the budget line."
She didn't flinch. I'll give her that.
"And because if I'm going to be a surgeon, I want to get there without anybody's name on my door but mine," I said. "Four years. The long way. Nobody owning a piece of it."
