Chapter 7: The Photographer
The photographer drank in a bar by the harbor, in the afternoons, with his camera bag between his feet.
Madam's driver found him in two hours.
He had called three hotel clerks and one taxi dispatcher, and he had not once raised his voice.
Linnet walked in at four with the driver beside her and a brown envelope in her purse.
The photographer looked up from his beer, saw the driver's size, and tried to stand.
"Sit," Linnet said. "I'm not here to hurt you."
"Who's that?" the photographer said, nodding at the driver.
"My husband's family's driver," Linnet said. "He's here to carry the money."
The photographer sat.
She set the photograph of the hotel corridor on the sticky table between them.
"You took this," she said.
"I take a lot of pictures."
"At five-forty on Tuesday morning, in the Marlow Hotel, for a young woman with dark curls."
His eyes flicked to the envelope and away.
"I don't know any young woman."
"Then you won't want this," Linnet said, and she began to close the purse.
"Wait."
He licked his lips.
"She paid me two thousand," he said. "Cash. She said a girl would come out of a room that morning, with a man, and I should get both faces."
"And did you?"
"I got her face. His was turned away." He rubbed his neck. "He had one of those little silver leaves on his coat. I thought, nobody wears that but the Ravenscroft family."
"And?"
"And I thought, that's a funny coincidence, because the Ravenscroft heir is dead."
The driver made a small noise that might have been a cough.
Linnet kept her face still.
"Who else asked you for the picture?" she said.
"A man. Fair hair. Very polite. He came to the hotel lobby at five and stood next to her while she gave me the order." The photographer shrugged. "She called him Anselm."
