Chapter 15: Family Day
Whitney lowered the pill bottle and did not say one word to me.
She walked back up the driveway in her white sneakers, past Colby and his flowered suitcase, and went inside the house.
Colby looked after her with his mouth open.
He had no idea what she had heard.
On Saturday the Group held Family Day on the big parade field, with bounce houses, a grill line and a banner that said THANK YOU FOR SERVING TOO.
Bravo Company had been asked to bring a Black Hawk for the children to climb on.
Darden had said yes before the request finished.
"If I'm going to be stared at," she told me, "I'd like to be stared at in front of a helicopter."
I stood by the open cargo door in my uniform and lifted a small boy into the cabin.
"Have you ever saved somebody?" he asked, putting on the pilot's helmet, which came down to his nose.
"A few."
"Did they say thank you?"
"Mostly they were asleep."
"That's rude," he said, and took the helmet off to give me the full effect.
Across the field the Colonel had a small stage with a podium and a table of coins.
