Chapter 24: Last Word
The battalion commander's office had one window and a flag, and for the first time it did not feel like a courtroom.
Jonas stood at attention in his flight suit, and I stood beside him with the medal still on my blouse.
Darden sat in a chair by the wall with her glasses on their cord and her arms folded.
"I'll read the findings once," said the battalion commander.
"Sergeant Pickens acted at all times in good faith. No misconduct is found against her."
"Thank you, sir."
"Captain Swafford admits a prohibited relationship with an enlisted soldier. He reported it himself before anyone else did, and I am noting that, because it is the only reason this is not worse."
"Yes, sir."
"The Army would like to give you back your company and a letter of reprimand," the commander went on. "The Army would also like me to pretend that is the end of it."
"It's not, sir."
Jonas reached inside his flight suit and took out a folded envelope.
He set it on the desk.
"My resignation of commission," he said. "Effective in thirty days, after I hand Bravo to the major."
I turned my head so fast my braid swung.
