Chapter 14: The Trade

"You're early," said Declan. "I like that in a man."

"You said she walks."

"I said I would think about it."

Ronan did not look at the zip tie the big man was pulling tight around his wrists.

He looked at me, and he looked at the tie on mine, and his jaw set hard.

"Take me," he said to Declan. "Whatever you planned for the two of us, do it to me. She goes home."

"Home," said Declan, as if tasting the word. "She doesn't have one anymore, cousin. That was the point."

"Declan."

"The boat comes to the dock behind this building at four. It's a good boat. It's been out before."

"Aunt Orla gets a note in the morning that you ran away with a murderess, and everyone is very sad."

He patted Ronan's cheek.

Then he went up the steps, and the big man went after him, and the steel door shut.

A bar dropped across the other side.

Neither of us said anything.

Ronan's breath clouded between us.

"I should not have let you walk out of that house alone," he said.

"I walked out of that house because you lied to me for three years."

"Yes."

"Don't talk. I'm busy."

I stood up.

My legs were stiff with cold, and my hands were tied in front of me, and I looked along the shelves.
