Chapter 19: The Vote
The family table met on the first Sunday of January, in Orla's dining room.
The curtains were drawn, and the Christmas tree was still lit in the corner.
Thirty men sat along the long walls.
Ronan sat at the foot of the table with his hands folded.
I sat at his shoulder with a canvas bag in my lap, and nobody had told me to leave.
Orla had said, "Let her sit. She's in more of this than any of you."
Declan stood at the head of the right-hand row in a charcoal suit, calm as a deacon.
Lena sat three chairs behind him with her hands in her lap and a gray silk scarf at her neck.
"Aunt Orla, captains," Declan said. "I hate to do this at the holidays."
"You'll do it anyway," said Orla.
"I will. The family has been patient."
"Three years ago my cousin went into the harbor off Pier 9. We buried an empty box for him."
