Chapter 11: The Blood Test
Ivy's POV
The healer drew my blood in Jonah's study at midnight.
She did it with a thin glass tube and a steady hand, and she told me plainly what she was looking for.
"It's your choice," she said. "He told me to say that."
"Take it," I said.
I watched my own blood fill the tube.
It was darker than it should have been, and slow.
Jonah stood at the window with his back to the room.
He had taken the silver off my wrists the moment the hall emptied, and he had said nothing about it.
He still said nothing.
When the healer had gone, he turned around.
"Tell me about the tea," he said.
"It started the morning after the bonding," I said. "I skipped it once, and Bree cried until I drank it."
"And Dane?"
"He was always at the table when she brought it."
"Watching?"
"Watching the cup," I said, and the memory turned over in my stomach. "Never me."
"Did Dane drink it?" Jonah asked.
"Never. He said it smelled like a sickroom."
"What did he drink?"
"Bree made him coffee. Every morning, in his own cup, at the same table."
"At the same table," Jonah said, and a muscle moved in his jaw.
"Why does that matter?"
"I don't know yet."
Jonah crossed the room slowly and stopped in front of me.
"I'm not good at this," he said.
"At what?"
"Saying I was wrong."
"You've said it twice."
"I haven't said it right."
He took a breath.
"I put a chain on a woman who was innocent, and I walked her past her own pack while they bled her. I called her a liar in a cage. I let my wolves howl at her. I ordered her to heal my sister, and I never said please."
