Chapter 19: The Kneeling
They came at dawn, one at a time, and the first was the guard who had chained me.
I sat on the top step of the Alpha house with my father's ring on my finger and a cup of plain water beside me.
No tea.
I would never drink tea in this house again.
The courtyard filled behind him, row after row, and nobody spoke.
The guard stopped three steps below me and went down on both knees.
"Alpha," he said. "I put silver on your wrists, and I held your arms for him. I'm sorry."
"Say it again, so the back rows hear, and say what you did."
His face went dark red.
"I held your arms for him," he said, louder, so the back rows heard. "I believed a message on a phone, and I never asked you a single question."
"You trained beside me for six years."
"Yes, Alpha."
"What does that tell you?"
His eyes squeezed shut.
"That I knew you," he said. "That I should have known."
"Stand up."
He stood, shaking.
"You'll stand watch on Bree's cage tonight and every night until the moon," I said. "When she talks, you listen, and you don't answer. When she cries, you don't bring her tea."
"Yes, Alpha."
"Go."
He went.
The next in line was a woman I had known since I was a child, and she came up the steps with a smooth grey stone in her hand.
She laid it on the step in front of my boots.
"I picked this up at the gate," she said. "I threw it at your head."
Her voice was flat.
"It hit me," I said.
"I know. I saw the blood."
"Why did you throw it?"
"Because Bree was crying." She said it simply, and she did not try to dress it up. "I was afraid of what it meant to doubt a girl who cried like that."
