Chapter 14: Acquisitions Travel

I did not take Kendra's word for it.

I took her to the lobby, bought her a coffee she did not drink, and made her put her phone on the table.

She opened a banking app that was not hers.

It belonged to a company card account in the name of Bexley Hotels Special Projects, and Preston's login was saved on her phone.

"He gave me the password so I could book the Charleston hotel," she said.

I scrolled.

It was eleven months of charges.

Flights, hotels, a jeweler in Myers Park, a deposit on a condo in Dilworth.

Every line was coded Acquisitions Travel.

At the bottom of the screen there was a total.

It was a hundred and eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars.

"Did you spend any of this?" I asked.

"Some." She looked at the table. "He said it was his bonus."

"It wasn't."

"I know that now."

I photographed every screen with my own phone.

Then I called Ford, who was in the lobby on the other side of the revolving door, and he came in and read it over my shoulder without a word.

His hand closed on the back of my chair.

"The police are one call," he said.

"No."

"Dessa."

"Not first," I said. "If we call them, Lowell reads it in a newspaper and spends a year saying it's a mistake."

I looked at Ford.

"He should see it with his own eyes, from us, in a room with nobody else in it."

Ford looked at me for a long moment.

"All right," he said.

We did it that evening, in the Bexley lodge ballroom.

The staff had stacked the chairs against the wall after a rehearsal dinner, and the long room was dark except for the work lights over the dance floor.

It was the room where I was supposed to have danced.
