Chapter 16: The Headline

The headline was on the Charlotte paper's website, above a photo of the lodge lawn.

NURSE MARRIES WEALTHY UNCLE: EX-FIANCE'S FAMILY PAYS.

Someone had taken the picture from the back row at the wedding that wasn't.

It showed me in the ivory dress with my hand on Ford's arm, and Preston's face turned toward us, white.

The article said I had "traded one Bexley for a richer one."

It said the family company had been "quietly handed" to my husband.

It did not say that I had paid for the lodge.

I read it on the dock with my coffee, and I read it again in the car.

At the grocery store, a woman in the cereal aisle looked at my face and then at her phone.

"You're her," she said.

"I'm Dessa."

"My sister says you did it for the money."

"Your sister can say what she likes," I said, and took a box of oatmeal off the shelf. "I paid for the lodge."

She did not know what to do with that, and I walked on.

At the hospital, the president met me in the lobby with his hands out in front of him.

"The press is outside. I can have security take you to the staff entrance."

"No, thank you."

"Dessa."

"I've been through a back door once already this month," I said.

There were four of them on the curb, with a camera and a microphone.

A young man with a tablet said, "Ms. Holm, did you marry Ford Bexley to get back at Preston?"

I looked into the lens.

"I married him because I wanted to," I said.

"My ex-fiance and my best friend ended my engagement at my own shower. I have the wedding invoice to show for it."

"Everything else in that article is Gwendolyn Bexley's, not mine."

I stopped.

I had said three sentences, and my voice had not shaken once.

"No further questions," I said, and went in to work.

I took the afternoon shift on the ward.

A six-year-old girl showed me her new scab, and I told her it was the best I'd seen all week.
