Chapter 10: Fourteen Months

When the door closed, Scott stood with his back to me and the form in his hands.

I waited.

My heart beat in my ears.

"I know that signature better than my own," he said.

"I said it isn't mine."

"I know it's not." He turned. "I know it's not now. I didn't know it then."

He reached inside his jacket and took out a thick folder, worn at the edges.

He laid it on the table and pushed it toward me.

"Open it."

Inside was a single sheet from a hospital in a small town in Pennsylvania.

BIRTH RECORD.

Male infant. 7 pounds, 2 ounces. Born 9:14 p.m. Apgar score of nine. Mother: MacAleese, Brynn M.

The ink was crisp.

I read it three times.

"He was breathing," I said.

"Yes."

"He was healthy."

"Yes."

"They told me he was dead. They told me." My voice split in two. "Where did you get this?"

"Fourteen months ago." Scott sat down across from me, heavily, like his knees had quit. "I went into Reginald's records room to find the terms of my contract. This was filed under an adoption lawyer's name, next to a stack of papers with your signature."

My skin went cold.

"You've known for fourteen months."

"Yes."

"That Jamie is mine."

"That he's yours," he said. "And mine."

I stood so fast the chair crashed backward.

"You let me stand in a stadium with a mop for three months. You let me walk into an ER and say it out loud while you knew."

"I needed to see what you'd do."

"What I'd do?"
