Chapter 15: What Jamie Knows

I'd rehearsed this for seven years, in every shower and on every bus.

None of it came.

"I'm your mom, Jamie."

He didn't blink.

"I had you in a hospital a long way from here," I said. "I was nineteen, and I was by myself, and I was scared."

"Where was Dad?"

"He didn't know. Some people told him lies, and they told me lies too."

Jamie thought about that.

"Were the lies about me?"

"Yes." My laugh came out wet. "I found out the truth when I saw your ear."

His mouth fell open.

He reached up and touched the crescent behind his left ear.

"The angel mark," he said.

"My mother used to say it was where an angel pressed a thumb and forgot to let go."

"Mom says that."

"Your dad told her. I told him, a long time ago."

I looked at Scott in the doorway.

His face was wide open, and he didn't try to hide it.

"Mom said you didn't want me," Jamie said.

"That was a lie too."
