Chapter 4: The Cage
I dropped the hairbrush at the lab on Delancey Street on my way home from that first day.
The woman at the counter took a cheek swab from me and asked if I wanted the three-day rush.
I paid for the rush with money I didn't have yet.
For three days I carried Scott's calendar, his protein shakes and his spare gloves.
He didn't speak to me unless it was an order.
On the third night he told me to be at the stadium at midnight.
I found him in the indoor batting cage under the stands, alone, in a damp T-shirt, with a bucket of baseballs at his feet.
The machine was turned off.
He was throwing by hand into a net, hard, one after another, and every ball hit with a crack that echoed off the concrete.
"You wanted me?" I said.
"Stand there."
He pointed at a spot behind the net.
I stood.
He threw another one.
It hit so loud I flinched.
"I want you to tell me something," Scott said. He didn't look at me. "Why did you take the job at the ballpark?"
"It was a job."
"Out of every building in this city."
"Marge works the lunch counter there. She told me they needed a crew."
"And it didn't occur to you that I would be here."
