Chapter 5: Not Convenient
I didn't go to Scott's house at six.
I went at eleven that night, with the report in my bag and my heart in my throat.
The housekeeper had gone home.
Jamie was at Delilah's.
The kitchen light was the only one on in the whole glass house, and Scott stood at the island in his shirtsleeves with a glass of water, reading a stack of sponsor papers.
"You're late by seventeen hours," he said, without looking up.
I walked to the island and laid the lab report on top of his papers.
"Read it."
He glanced down.
The page sat there between us under the hanging lamp.
He read it slowly, the way I'd seen him read a catcher's signals.
His face didn't change at all.
I had braced for shock, or anger, or joy.
He picked it up by one corner, set it back down and said, "Convenient."
"What?"
"Convenient. A hairbrush. A lab in a strip mall." He finally looked up. "Seven years of nothing, and a week after you get close to my son, you have a piece of paper. How much do you want, Brynn?"
My hand came up before I knew it.
He caught my wrist an inch from his face.
"How much," he said, low.
"I was nineteen," I said. My voice cracked and I didn't care. "Delilah's father owned your contract. Delilah came to my dorm with a check for two hundred thousand dollars and told me you'd be cut and blacklisted if I stayed. She said I was a ticket girl carrying the prospect's baby and Reginald Hargate would bury you."
"Stop."
"I left because I loved you. I tore up the check on the highway. I gave birth alone in a hospital in Pennsylvania and a doctor told me he was dead."
His grip tightened.
I kept going, because if I stopped I would break.
