Ronan's POV

I left her asleep with the sheet over her shoulder and the silver crescent still faint on her wrist.

I stood in the hall outside my own bedroom for a full minute with my forehead against the wall.

A mate-mark doesn't rise on a Hartley by accident.

It rises when the Moon says so, and the Moon had said it to me about a woman who had given me one rule and then broken it.

She had come to my bed in grief.

She had told me in a barn, three days ago, that she would decide when it ended.

I did not believe she would stay.

She had spent four years being groomed as a Luna.

She knew the pack, the ledger, the long dinners with the elders.

A wolf who has been trained for a chair has a habit of looking for it.

I put on boots and went out into the gray morning, because the alternative was to wake her and ask.

Nash was waiting at the north gate, in his truck, with the engine off.

"You didn't sleep," he said.

"Neither did you."

"I've been at the Bloodmoon border since four." He rubbed his face. "The hall is a mess. Half the elders have refused to rise when Warrick enters. He's sitting in his office with the door locked."

"Good."

"He knows about the stone, Alpha. He knew before the registry. I found the packing lists in his father's study, three years of them. The leaf. The glass case. The pen." He swallowed. "He's been planning that morning since before his father died."

"I know."

"There's something else."
