Chapter 4: Your Mother's Name

Hester made me sit at the kitchen table before she said another word.

She put a mug of black coffee in front of me, real coffee, and a plate of the cold biscuits she baked every Sunday.

Then she sat across from me with her hands flat on the wood.

They were old hands, knotted at the knuckles, and they were not steady.

"You know your mother was a Lowry," she said.

"I know she was your daughter."

"She was born in the old Alpha's house. The old Alpha was my husband, and he led Bloodmoon for thirty-one years."

I stared at her.

"Grandpa died of a heart attack. You told me."

"I told you what I told everybody."

She looked past me, at the window and the pines.

"Warrick's father was his Beta. Twenty-six years ago, he put a knife in my husband's back in his own study and said a rogue had done it."

I put the mug down.

"Nobody ever asked who the rogue was?"

"He was the one who found the body, and he stood up at the funeral and took the Alpha's chair. The pack was frightened and wanted someone to stand there."

"And my mother?"

"Your mother was twenty-five with a three-year-old girl on her hip. That girl was you." Her voice flattened. "She was the true heir, with Lowry blood in her. A Dunmoor Alpha can hold a pack by force, but the stone won't seat him as lawful unless Lowry blood signs beside him as Luna."

"The registry stone."

"Aye. He knew it. So he gave out that she had run off and died in a ditch, and I helped him say it. I gave him that lie to save her."

She finally looked at me.

"I took her to the human side of the mountain, where she married a good, ordinary man who never knew what she was. He raised you as his. I thought you would both be safe as long as the Dunmoors believed the Lowry line was ash."
