Chapter 5: Six Wolves at the Door

They came up the gravel road at dusk, in a line, with their headlights off.

I watched from the kitchen window with Hester's old shotgun in my hands.

I had never fired it, and she had said that was fine, because nobody ever needed it fired.

Six wolves in Bloodmoon gray spread out across the yard, and Warrick walked through the middle of them with a flat leather case under his arm.

Nash stood on my porch step with his back to me.

"If you're going to say you're sorry," he'd told me an hour earlier, "don't. Just let me stand somewhere useful."

I opened the door and came out.

Hester followed with her chin up and her cardigan buttoned wrong.

"Roxanne," Warrick said, pleasantly. "You drove away before we finished."

"We finished."

"We didn't." He set the case on the hood of my Subaru and snapped the clasps. "I've been unfair to you today. I know that. I'm man enough to say it."

Inside the case lay a single cream-colored page, pressed between two sheets of glass.

I had never seen it before.

It was a ledger leaf, cut from the registry book, with the Bloodmoon crest printed at the top.

"You took that out of the registry," Hester said.

"I'm the Alpha. The leaf is mine to carry." He didn't look at her. "A drop of Roxanne's blood on this page does the same work as the stone. We can seat the pack tonight, in private, and no one needs to know what the stone said."

He turned to me, and his voice dropped, warm and low.

"You'll be Luna, Roxanne. You'll have every honor. Vera will be my Beta-wife and live in the north house. She'll never touch your chair."
