Chapter 10: Homecoming

On Saturday afternoon the whole school was in the stadium for Homecoming, and so was Brock.

He wasn't supposed to be.

The dean's suspension had been stayed on Thursday while his family's lawyers filed an appeal.

I found that out from a banner in the student section.

It said WELCOME BACK CAPTAIN, in red letters six feet tall.

Adrienne sat next to me in the fourth row, wearing a Whitlock sweatshirt and sunglasses.

We had come separately, which was her idea.

"My father's reach is long," she said, without moving her mouth. "I can't believe they got him back on campus in two days."

"Is your father at the game?"

"He's in the president's box."

I looked up.

Gordon Merrick sat high above the fifty-yard line behind glass with a coffee in his hand, smiling at the crowd.

I didn't look at him for long.

At halftime the band cleared the field.

Brock walked out to the center in his lacrosse jacket, his arm no longer in a sling.

He carried a wireless microphone.

The crowd roared for him.

He waited for it to die down, taking his time.

"Hey, Whitlock," he said, and his voice boomed off the stands. "I'd like to say something to a guy in section F."

I felt the whole stadium turn.

"Gilligan. Yeah, you. The billionaire."

Nine thousand people looked at me.

"Everybody's been talking about how strong you are."

A few boos, a few cheers.

"So here's a deal. Come down here. One forty-yard dash, right now, me against you."

The crowd noise rose.

"If I win, you leave Whitlock and never come back."
