Chapter 17: Mrs. Keene
The headline went up at 7:12 on Monday morning, while I was eating cold toast over Gloria's keys.
"BIGAMIST BRIDE: Wexler Wedding Runaway Hid Husband."
Under it sat a photo of me on the piano bench, mouth open, mid-word.
Pearl read it aloud from behind the front desk in her best radio voice.
"'Sources close to the Wexler family.' Sources. I'll source her."
"She told the Providence Journal I committed a crime," I said.
"She told it a lie with a lawyer's shape on it."
I put down the toast.
A bigamist is a person who marries twice.
I had cancelled the second wedding with a microphone in front of two hundred and forty witnesses.
Cecily knew that.
She had written the headline so that nobody who read it would stop to count.
My phone rang.
It was the reporter named in the byline, asking for a comment.
She had the polite, hungry voice of someone who already had one quote and wanted another.
"Where will you be at nine?" I asked her.
"I'm sorry?"
"I'll give you a better story than hers. Bring your camera. Keene Harbor Group, the old brick mill on the water."
She was in a car behind my van before I'd turned off Wickenden Street.
I parked across two spaces and walked in with my tool roll still on my shoulder, because I'd forgotten to put it down.
The lobby of Keene Harbor was all raw brick, tall windows, and an enormous ship's wheel bolted to the wall.
Twenty people stood around a coffee station in lanyards.
A young receptionist at a curved desk looked up and smiled the smile they teach.
"Good morning. Do you have an appointment?"
