Chapter 22: First Year's Money
I did not open the flash drive in the boardroom.
I carried it out of the building in my fist and did not stop until I reached the shop.
Pearl and Bram followed in his truck.
I heard them park, and I heard the door chime, and I did not turn around.
I plugged the drive into the old laptop on the front desk.
One folder opened.
It held thirty-six scanned bank statements, in order, with a name highlighted in yellow on each page.
Ambrose Keene, wire transfer, to P. Spalding, the first of every month.
Five thousand dollars, then six, then seven thousand, then back to six.
I scrolled to the last page and saw the total in a private investigator's careful red ink.
Two hundred and eleven thousand, four hundred dollars.
Over three years.
I looked at the date of the first transfer.
It was the August after my father's funeral, the same week the bank had sent its letter about the shop's loan.
