Chapter 26: Cecily
I stopped Bram's hand on the doorknob.
"Wait on the step," I said. "Pearl, take the cannoli upstairs."
"I'll leave my hearing aids in," Pearl said. "In case."
"Take them out."
She gave me a look of deep betrayal and climbed the stairs with the pastry box, switching them off with ceremony.
Bram sat on the front step with the door open a crack behind him.
I let myself in, and the chime rang.
Cecily Wexler did not turn around.
She sat at the bench of my father's Bechstein in her good camel coat, with her gloved hands in her lap.
She was looking at the keys.
"The tailor next door has a key," she said. "He is easily moved by pearls."
I stood by the register and did not take off my coat.
"What do you want, Cecily?"
"To ask you something."
She turned, slowly, on the bench.
She looked older than she had in the boardroom.
The chignon was perfect, and the pearls were in place.
Her eyes had the dry red look of a woman who has been awake for four days.
"I'm told I've been removed from the Hall," she said. "I'm told my son has been voted off his own letterhead, and the house on Hope Street is to be listed."
