Chapter 28: The Unsent Letter
The envelope was soft as cloth at the corners and addressed in blue ballpoint.
Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Keene, in care of the chapel on Virginia Street, Reno, Nevada.
The handwriting was mine.
The stamp was a flag, and the postmark was seven years old.
"I don't remember sending this," I said.
My voice came out thin and strange.
The old woman behind the counter took her glasses off and let them hang on their chain.
"You don't remember mailing a letter to the one address you and your husband shared on paper?" she said, dry as toast.
"It came in August. We keep unclaimed mail ten years, and nobody ever claimed this one."
"I figured somebody would be along."
"You waited seven years," Bram said.
"Honey, I've waited longer for worse people."
She looked from his beard to my face.
"Take it outside. People cry in here, but not on my carpet."
We sat on the low wall under the plastic roses, in the thin cold sun, with the traffic on Virginia Street going by.
