Chapter 19: Tori Takes the Stand
By nine that night the loading floor of Reed Terminal held five bosses, a ring of folding chairs, and one empty seat.
Carter had made a table out of two forklift pallets and a white cloth from the break room.
He put the cloth down himself, smoothing it flat with the hand that had a scar.
Behind the pallets, forty dock men stood against the cranes with their arms folded.
Nobody had asked them to come.
The grey witness sat at the head.
The balding witness sat beside him.
Three more men filled the chairs, one white-haired, one young and sharp in a leather coat, one enormous and silent.
Each had come with two guards, and every guard had checked his gun at the gate.
The sixth chair, at the foot of the table, belonged to Giorgio.
It was empty.
"He was invited," the grey witness said.
"Twice."
"He sent a lawyer instead," Carter said.
"The lawyer went home when he saw the room."
The balding witness cleared his throat.
"This table is called because a man fired on neutral ground in front of a witness of mine."
