Chapter 16: The Desk
Miranda's POV
By Monday afternoon I had been looked at by more strangers than in the three years before.
Brandon's post sat at the top of every group chat at Ridgemont.
It had the photo of me leaving Geoffrey's office, and the Commons video cut down to ten seconds of me shouting.
Over it he had typed, My ex is sleeping with her professor. Ridgemont, is that allowed?
He had tagged the university, the economics department, and half the lacrosse team.
I went to my shift at the library desk anyway.
It was my job, and the rent was due on the first.
Maddie had offered to sit beside me with a baseball bat.
I said no, and then I said yes to the coffee.
The desk faces the front doors, with the returns cart on one side and the scanner on the other.
At two o'clock a girl I had never met came up to it with no book in her hands.
"Are you Miranda?" she asked.
"Yes."
"Is it true?"
I looked at her, and behind her stood four more people with their phones in their pockets and their faces held carefully still.
It was a line, and it was not for books.
"Which part?" I said.
"The professor."
"Yes," I said. "I'm seeing Professor Ames. He never graded me, and the unit ended last Thursday. I'm twenty-two. I'm allowed."
The girl blinked.
"And the bet?"
"That part is true too."
Somebody behind her drew a breath.
"Brandon bet his cousin a car that he could keep a girlfriend for a year," I said. "I was the girlfriend. I found out Saturday night, from a recording."
"Wait," said a boy at the back. "The recording from the Candice thing?"
"What Candice thing?"
He held up his phone.
