Chapter 10: Green Dress

Nathaniel's house sat on a hill above the lake, plain and dark and a lot quieter than his mother's.

Polly fell asleep in his arms on the way in and woke up long enough to demand pancakes.

"Tomorrow," he said.

"Nate makes bad ones."

"Tomorrow, I make them badly, and Della eats them anyway."

"Deal," Polly said, and was out again.

He carried her upstairs.

I stood in the front hall in the one black dress I owned.

My shoes were beginning to cut my heels, and I couldn't see the ceiling.

A housekeeper in a cardigan came out of a back room, looked at me, looked at the stairs.

And went back in, closing the door very softly.

When Nathaniel came down, he didn't turn on a light.

He just stood on the bottom step and looked at me.

"I'd like to take you upstairs," he said.

"Polly's up there."

"The east wing. There's a lock on the door."

"A lock."

"I'm told it's useful with six-year-olds."

I laughed.

It cracked in the middle, and I put my hand over my mouth.

And then I was crossing the hall and he was meeting me halfway.

This time I took his face in both hands.

"I want to see you," I said. "All of you. Slowly."

"You've got a very demanding streak."

"You have no idea."

He took me up.

His room had a big bed, a bank of windows with the lake behind them, and nothing on the walls.

He locked the door, and the click of it went through me.

I pushed him back against it.

I undid his shirt one button at a time, and he let me, breathing hard, with his hands fisted at his sides.

His chest was broad and warm.

There was a scar low on his ribs, long and white.

"Boat," he said. "Sixteen. Don't ask."

"I'm asking."

"Later."

I pushed the shirt off his shoulders and kissed the scar.

His breath hitched.

I went lower, to my knees, in a dress I'd been wearing since yesterday.

And got his belt and his zipper open and his cock out into my hand.

He was hard already.

Hot and heavy, the head dark with blood, a bead of wet at the slit.
