Chapter 17: Chief of Staff
The Lakeshore General board met at nine, in a room with a view of the parking garage.
Eleven directors sat around a long table.
The hospital's lawyer sat at one end, and the retired nurse sat at the other in her church dress, holding her pocketbook on her knees.
I took the chair beside her.
Nathaniel stood behind me with one hand on the back of it.
At the center, in a white coat with his silver glasses folded in his hand, sat Dr. Lyle.
He had not slept, and he had shaved badly.
Constance sat three seats down from him in a navy suit.
She was a director here too, I learned, and she had not missed a meeting in twenty years.
She looked at me once, politely.
"We are here on an unusual matter," said the board chair, a thin man with a tired voice.
"Dr. Lyle was found last night in a sealed records room, destroying files under a court preservation order."
"There was a misunderstanding about the order," said Dr. Lyle.
