Chapter 18: What Misty Saw
The quarry went completely quiet.
Bronco reached for the microphone, and Misty stepped back out of his reach.
"Twenty-six months ago," she said, and her voice shook so hard the speakers crackled, "a girl named Dina Broadbent came to a party at the clubhouse."
"Misty," said Bronco.
"She was twenty-one. She wore a silver necklace with a D on it, and she was Bronco's girl."
"Sit down, honey."
"She walked down the hall and found him in the back room with me."
A mutter went around the fire.
Bronco laughed, loudly, and spread his hands to the crowd.
"You see what I've had to live with?" he said. "She's a pill girl. She'd say anything for a bag."
"She screamed at him," Misty said, louder. "She said she'd tell her brother. She said her brother was a big man who didn't talk and would take him apart."
She turned her head and looked at Ronan.
He stood at my shoulder with his fists closed.
His eyes were on the ground.
"Bronco put his arm across her throat," Misty said. "I stood there. I didn't stop him. I held the door, because he told me to, and I hate myself every day."
Somebody near the front said a very quiet curse.
"She kicked for a long time. Then she stopped. He wrapped her in the rug off the floor. We put her in the back of his truck, and we drove behind the clubhouse to this quarry."
Her voice cracked on the last word.
"He dug at the north wall, past the second ledge. I held the flashlight. I'm so sorry."
