Chapter 20: The Quarry Wall

Ronan's POV

I kept my headlight on her taillight and my eyes on Bronco's.

Ahead of us on the gravel, his Harley hit the gate and stopped.

Cyrus's men had chained it shut an hour before, to keep the visitors in.

Bronco cut left, onto the old quarry track.

Roz saw it before I did.

She went right.

She dropped the Sportster off the road into the weeds, crossed a ditch that would have taken my front wheel, and came out on the inside of the long curve.

She had won this track once with a bad brake line and a lap to spare.

She knew every foot.

I took the road around and lost sight of her for half a minute.

I heard the engines before I saw the wall.

The north face of the quarry stood in the dark, white and sheer, forty feet high, with a ledge halfway up.

Bronco's Harley came down the final straight at ninety.

Out of the black, Roz's headlight swung across the track in front of him.

She had cut the corner and was waiting, parked sideways across the dirt.

Bronco hit the brakes.

The back wheel locked and the bike went down on its side and slid.

He rolled off and came up on his knees with gravel in his face.

I stopped fifty yards back and killed my engine.

Roz stood in front of her bike with her hands empty.

"Get up," she said.

Bronco got up.

He had a knife in his left hand, because his right arm hung useless in the sling.

"You little bitch," he said. "You stupid little mechanic."
