Chapter 14: The Pack Hall

Garrick stood in the cabin doorway with the cold at his back.

He had heard every word.

His face had gone grey, and I did not have the room in me to look at it.

"After," I said. "I'll hear you after."

"Rhea..."

"Call your pack to the hall, Garrick. All of it. Tonight."

He swallowed.

"The Beta will be there."

"Good."

We came down the Ironbark road at dusk, Bram on my left, Hester behind me with her satchel, and Lenore walking between two Greywater wolves with her wrists tied.

Ewan slept against my chest, full and warm.

The horn had sounded twice, and the pack was waiting.

Two hundred wolves filled Ironbark Hall, pressed shoulder to shoulder under the stone beams.

Under our feet, under the dais, was the iron door of the frost cell.

I walked up the centre aisle with my son in my arms.

Nobody spoke.

The Beta stood at the foot of the dais, in his white beard and his good grey coat, and his face did not move.

"The rejecter returns," he said. "The pack's mercy does not stretch to trespass."

"I didn't come for mercy," I said.

I turned and faced the hall.

"A week ago I was dragged down those steps in labour. I was nine months along, and my mate stood and watched."

Garrick came in behind me and stopped inside the door.

Heads turned toward him.

"He locked me in because your law says the firstborn male pup takes everything," I said. "So I'll have your law read. Out loud. Now."

A murmur ran through the benches.

"Elder," I said.

The oldest woman in the hall rose from the front bench.

She had read the law at every naming for forty years.
