Chapter 19: Moon Court

The Moon Court judge was a small old woman in a grey robe, with a silver chain across her chest.

She sat on a flat stone in the middle of the old circle, and both packs ringed her in the snow.

She had not smiled once.

"The Beta of Ironbark contests the birth of a pup," she said. "State your case, Beta."

The Beta stepped forward in his good grey coat.

"The pup was born in a cell, under a rejected mother, with no witness," he said. "A boy the pack never saw cannot take the seat."

"The pack has seen him," the judge said. "I have the elder's account of the hall."

"After the fact."

"Is there another kind of seeing?"

A rustle of laughter went along the Greywater side.

The Beta's jaw shifted.

"Then I put it plainly. The mother is a rejecter. The healer is a frightened old woman with a grudge. The Alpha is a keeper who has lost his wits. This is a conspiracy to put a stranger's whelp on the Wycliffe seat."

"Who is the stranger?" the judge said.

"A rejecter's pup. Father unknown."

"Father unknown," Garrick said, from the front of the Ironbark benches. His cheek was black and stitched. "I stood in a hall and named him my son in front of two hundred wolves."

"A man in grief will name anything."

"I'll say it again, Beta. He's mine."

The judge raised one finger, and both of them stopped.

"Bring me the child," she said.

I carried Ewan across the snow and held him out.

She did not take him.

She bent her face to his blanket, and breathed in, and her eyes closed.

It lasted a long time.

"Moon Court judges read blood by scent," she said, to the circle. "It is the oldest test in the law, and it does not lie."

She opened her eyes.

"This pup is Garrick Wycliffe's. He is also Rhea MacTavish's. There is no doubt in me."

A cry went up from the Ironbark side.
