Chapter 22: Luna
The Luna ceremony was held at Greywater Lodge on the first full moon of February.
Ninety Greywater wolves filled the long hall, and two hundred from Ironbark stood in the yard with their hoods up in the snow.
I had never seen the two packs under one roof.
Sinead had cleared the tables and hung every lantern in the lodge.
She stood at the head of the hall in her best apron, with flour still on her wrist.
In her hands was a grey wool cloak with a silver clasp.
"It was our mother's," she said. "She'd want you to have it."
Her voice cracked on the last word.
"Don't," I said. "If you cry, I'll cry, and I'm holding a baby."
"I'm not crying. It's the lanterns."
She put the cloak around my shoulders and fastened the clasp, and she kissed my cheek loudly.
Bram stood in front of me.
He wore a clean shirt buttoned to the throat, and under it, on his shoulder, was the mark I had left.
"Greywater," he said, to the hall. "This is Rhea MacTavish, who rejected an Alpha to his face and came out of a frost cell alive. She is my mate. She is your Luna. Anyone who has a word against it can say it now."
Silence.
Then a woman in the back said, "Does she cook?"
"No," I said.
The hall roared.
Hester came forward from the corner, with her granddaughter holding her hand.
She did not meet my eyes.
"Luna," she said. "I'll tend your son's cord until I'm dead. It's not enough."
"No," I said. "It isn't."
She flinched.
"But you did it," I said. "You came to me at the graveyard with a shovel. That's the part I'm taking."
Her granddaughter, who was six, tugged at my cloak.
"Are you the one with the red hair?" she asked.
"I'm the one."
"Gran says you're a hero."
