Chapter 6: The Gate

The north post was a gravel road, a gate and a snowbank, with half of Greywater lined up behind it.

Garrick stood alone on the Ironbark side.

He had left his horse tied to a tree and his enforcers at the bridge.

He wore the charcoal coat from the moot, and his face was grey and unshaven.

When he saw me come out beside Bram, he took one step and stopped.

"Rhea."

"Alpha Wycliffe," I said. "You're on Greywater ground."

"I came to take you home."

I laughed.

The sound surprised me, and so did the lines of Greywater wolves going quiet on both sides.

"Home," I said. "The place with the cell under it."

"The elders will forgive the rejection. I've spoken to them. You'll be Luna again by the next moon."

"Garrick, I rejected you."

"I know. I felt it."

He pressed a hand flat against his chest.

"It's been two days," he said. "I haven't slept. My wolf won't come. The healer says it's the bond breaking and that it will kill a mated Alpha in a month if it isn't mended."

"That's a lot of words for a man who needs something."

"I need you to take it back," he said.

I looked at his hands.

They were shaking, and he didn't try to hide it.

I thought of a stone floor and a slit window and a face at it, and a pair of boots going back up the stairs.

"You looked at me," I said.

"What?"

"Never mind."

I turned to Bram.

"Is there a place I can stand where he can see me?"

"The road is public," Bram said. "The grass isn't."

"The road, then."

I walked to the middle of it, through the gate, until I was ten feet from Garrick with the snow squeaking under my boots.
