Chapter 9: Mabry's Boxes

Mabry carried her whole career out of the Hall in one banker's box.

It held a stapler, a fern and two mugs.

It also held a photo of us at fifteen with matching braces, and a laminated sign that read FRONT DESK: BE NICE.

She set it on the pass and wiped her nose on her puffer coat.

"He called it disloyalty," she said. "In writing. He slid a letter across my desk like it was a parking ticket."

"For what?"

"For the town page. He saw my post." She laughed, wetly. "I put one little post up. I used an exclamation point."

Abel poured her a coffee without being asked and slid a cinnamon roll onto a plate beside it.

She looked at him, and at me, and at the flannel he had buttoned wrong, and her eyes narrowed through the tears.

"Oh," she said. "Oh, you didn't."

"I'm not discussing it," I said.

"Hattie Doyle."

"There's a pot of cabbage on."

"I will be discussing it later at length," Mabry said, and bit into the roll, and cried a bit more into the icing.

Ansel patted the stool beside him.

She sat, blinking, and he pushed the sugar bowl toward her.

It did.

By ten the diner had changed.

The Grange women arrived with folding chairs and a folding table.

The man who plows came with his truck, and two teenagers brought a pegboard to hang the map on.

Mabry stood in the middle of it all with her glasses pushed up in her hair and a clipboard in each hand.

She had started crying in a kitchen and finished organizing one.

"Tables go in the street," she said. "Main Street, between the diner and the church."

"The fire chief says he'll close it if I file a form by Friday. I'm filing a form."

"A form," said the green parka.

"I'm so good at forms," Mabry said, in a voice I had not heard since she won the district spelling bee.
