Chapter 12: The Scent in the Trees
He stood at the far end of the shelf, where the rock dropped away into the dark.
The wind came up from the valley and moved his hair.
I stopped three steps behind him.
"Wystan says you came down off the ridge the night I was marked."
He did not turn.
"Wystan talks too much."
"Is it true?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
He was silent so long that I thought he would not answer.
"The wind turned at dusk," he said. "It came down off the ridge and blew through the camp, and then it went into the valley, and it carried a scent."
"Whose?"
"Yours."
My throat closed.
"I had never smelled it before," he said, very low. "I was thirty-eight years old, and I had been told my whole life that I would not have a mate, because lycans mostly don't. And then there was this scent, in the wind, from a mile away."
"You walked down to the trees."
"I walked down to the trees, and I stood in them, and I smelled you coming."
I put my hand against my mouth.
"The scent you followed was mine," he said. "My wolf was calling you. It carried down the valley, and Hadrian walked into the same trail, and he smelled something in the air and reached for the first woman standing in it."
"I came to the trees on my own."
"You came to the trees because I was in them."
"And Hadrian?"
"Hadrian came after you. I watched him step in front of you."
I felt something give way in my chest.
"You were there," I said. "In the dark. You watched me turn around."
