Chapter 13: Rules, Alpha

"Show me," I said.

Madoc looked at me.

"Show you what?"

"That it's real. That it isn't another wind."

"Nerys, you have a mark that is still falling off your neck."

"Then be careful."

He did not move.

Rue was pressing so hard against my ribs that it hurt.

"You told me you kept your hands shut for four nights," I said. "Open them."

"You said hands to yourself."

"I said a lot of things."

"You said it at my door, an hour ago."

"And you walked away from me, and I stood there with my lip on fire."

My voice shook, and I let it.

"Rules, Alpha. Put your hands on me."

He crossed the three steps between us in one stride.

He did not grab me.

He lifted his right hand slowly, giving me time to change my mind.

He laid his palm flat against my neck, over the flaking skin.

The pain went out of it at once.

Then something else came in.

A heat started under his hand and spread down my collarbone, into my breasts and my belly.

Then the scent of him hit me all at once.

Snow and woodsmoke.

It was not coming down the valley on the wind now.

It was in my mouth, and in the hair on my arms, and I could not smell anything else.

"Oh," I said.

"Yes."

"It's you. It's all you."

"It always was."

I took hold of his coat in both fists and pulled his mouth down to mine.

He made a low sound against my lips, and his other hand came up into my hair.

He kissed me the way he had at the feast.
