Chapter 9: The Lycan Feast
"Tell me what's wrong with what Cecily said," I said.
We were back in the camp, and Madoc had not stopped walking since the tree line.
"I'll tell you when I'm certain."
"Certain of what?"
"Nerys."
"You went white."
"I didn't."
"You did."
He stopped at the mouth of his tent and turned, and for a moment I thought he would answer.
"Tonight the packs come up the ridge to the lycan feast," he said instead. "Every Alpha at the Gathering has been invited, and most of them will come to look at you."
"That's not an answer."
"It is the one I have." His voice gentled, a little. "Wear what Hild gives you. Eat. Let them look."
"And then?"
"And then you will have been seen at my table."
I wanted to push.
But I had seen what had crossed his face by the pines, and it had not been guilt.
He had looked hurt, not guilty.
I let him go.
Hild gave me a dress of dark red wool, cut long in the sleeve and low in the neck.
I looked at the mark in the polished plate she held up.
It was swollen and ugly, and I did not cover it.
The feast was in the open on the shelf of rock, with a dozen long tables and fires burning all down the middle.
The Alphas of the eastern packs came up the road in small groups, in good coats, and sat down at the far end where it was safest.
I took the seat at Madoc's right.
Every eye in the camp followed me there.
"So this is the one," said an old Alpha with a gray beard, loud enough for the whole table. "The thrown-away wolf."
Madoc put down his cup.
