Chapter 14: Good Boy

By dark there were nine reporters on Vallejo Street.

They stood on the sidewalk under the lemon tree with cameras on their shoulders, and one of them had put a coffee cup on our gate.

Angelo pulled every curtain in the house.

He spent the evening on the phone with lawyers, pacing the hall with one hand in his hair, and I sat on the stairs with my ankle up and watched him do it.

I did not cry.

I stared at the lights on the ceiling instead, because it was easier than thinking about how many people had saved that picture.

At three in the morning the doorbell rang.

Angelo was down the hall before I had my crutches.

"Don't open it," I said. "It could be a camera."

He looked through the glass in the door.

Then he opened it anyway.

Tomas stood on the step in yesterday's suit, with no tie and a laptop bag over his shoulder.

His eyes were red, but they were clear.

I had never seen him look so awake.

"I haven't had a drink in thirty hours," he said. "I want you to know that first."

Angelo didn't say a word.

"I got the microphone because I was drunk," Tomas said. "I came here because I'm not."

He took a laptop out of the bag and opened it on the hall table, under the picture of our wedding.

"I deleted these in March. She asked me to. She said they'd only hurt Tala." He turned the screen toward us. "But I never signed out of my old laptop, and it kept everything."
