Chapter 23: The Glass at Ponte
The hostess at Ponte saw me come through the door and put down her pen.
"Mrs. Alcantara."
"Hello."
"He's been at his table since eleven." She lowered her voice, and this time it wasn't the way people do when a thing is sad. "He had them change the tablecloth twice."
"Thank you."
"Take your time," she said, and walked me through the room herself.
It was Thursday at one o'clock.
The window table was set for two.
Angelo stood when he saw me.
He was in the charcoal suit, and he looked like a man who had not slept, and he did not pull out my chair.
He waited.
I pulled it out myself and sat down across from him, and the second seat at his table was finally taken.
He sat too.
A waiter set down two glasses of water and did not leave fast this time.
In the left-hand glass, at the bottom, lay a gold ring.
It caught the light through the window.
I didn't touch it.
Beside my plate there was a manila folder, and when I opened it, there were papers I knew by heart.
They were the lawyer's forms, with the lines for the signatures at the bottom.
His was signed in blue ink.
Mine was empty.
"That's what I should have given you on the first day," Angelo said. "Everything. Signed. In your hand, with nothing attached."
"You said you wouldn't sign."
"I said that so you'd stay." His voice was quiet. "I won't keep you that way again. If you take that pen, I'll walk you to the door."
"And if I don't?"
"Then I'll ask you something else."
"Ask."
He folded his hands on the cloth.
"In March, at two in the morning, you stood in our kitchen and said room 1412, tell me. I didn't answer. I looked at a photograph, and I let you scream."
