Chapter 34: The Box
Angelo's POV
My head of security carried the box into my study himself and set it on the desk.
He didn't say anything, and I was grateful.
It was an ordinary banker's box, gray cardboard with handholds, the kind the Grand used by the hundred.
On the lid, in black marker, someone had written G. and under it, Personal.
I knew the handwriting.
I had read it on ten years of sticky notes.
Tala stood in the doorway in her robe.
"I'm going to open it alone," I said. "I'm down the hall. If I need you, I'll say so out loud."
"The door stays open."
"The door stays open."
She went upstairs, and I heard her stop on the landing and not go any farther.
I took off the lid.
Envelopes stood on their edges in rows, packed tight, a hundred and more.
They were bundled by year with rubber bands that had gone brittle.
Every one was addressed in the same slanting hand.
Angelo Alcantara, c/o Alcantara Grand Hotel, San Francisco, California.
The stamps were Philippine.
The postmarks said Cebu.
