Chapter 35: Ask Her
Tala's POV
Angelo carried the box into room 1412 on Sunday evening in both arms.
He had read for six nights.
He had slept about three hours in all.
He hadn't said a word about it.
He had only come to bed at dawn and held on to me.
The phones went into the basket by the door.
Tomas put his in last, with Dessa's hand in his other hand.
The coin was in his pocket where he could feel it.
Lourdes sat at the head of the table in her black dress and pearls.
The adobo had come up, and the rice, and the sour fruit.
I had eaten four crackers in the elevator so I wouldn't be sick.
Five places were laid.
The sixth sat at the foot of the table with its folded napkin and its empty glass.
It was still set for the friend who never left.
Angelo walked down the length of the room.
He set the box on top of the sixth plate.
Nobody spoke.
Dessa's fork stopped halfway to her mouth.
"What is that?" Lourdes said.
"Mama." Angelo stayed standing at the foot of the table. "Why did you leave?"
She did not move.
I watched her hands, and they lay flat on the cloth.
"You asked me that in the driveway," she said. "Ten years ago."
