Chapter 44: The Hearing
The parole room had a long wooden table, a flag in the corner and a window that did not open.
Three members of the board sat on one side of it with files in front of them.
Noelle sat on the other side in her blue state shirt, beside a young lawyer with a folder.
Her hands were folded on the wood, and her braid lay over one shoulder.
She had never looked so calm.
It was Tuesday, the third of June.
I was fifteen weeks along, in a loose green dress that showed it.
Angelo sat on my left with his hand over mine on my knee.
Lourdes sat on my right in her black dress and her pearls, with a folded page in her lap.
Tomas and Dessa sat behind us, and Tomas had brought his coin and was turning it over in his pocket.
The woman in the middle of the board read from her file.
"Ferrer. Pleaded guilty in November to fraud, identity theft and unauthorized access to a computer system. Good conduct. Two letters of support."
She looked up.
"One of them is from a sponsor who has offered housing abroad. Is the sponsor present?"
Lourdes stood.
She did it slowly, and she kept one hand on the back of her chair.
"I am the sponsor," she said.
"Mrs. Alcantara."
