Chapter 16: The Suite

Kate's POV

The room at the top of the Gilt was all black glass and white leather, with the whole gray Atlantic on three sides.

Dane stood at the far window in a navy suit, holding a drink.

There were six men along the walls with their hands folded.

My father sat in a leather chair in the middle of the carpet with a glass of ginger ale on his knee, and he lifted two fingers at me.

"Hi, honey," he said. "They haven't hurt me. I've been rude to all of them."

My shoulders came down.

I walked to him and kissed the top of his head.

"There she is," Dane said. "The red. Good girl."

"Don't call me that."

"Sit, Kate."

"I'll stand."

He smiled and put his glass on the bar.

A camera on a tripod stood in front of the window, with its red light already on.

"That's for you," he said. "You'll say two things into it."

"Which two?"

"One, that you're here by choice. Two, that you'll marry me, and the note goes away as a wedding present."

"Marry you."

"Eventually, sweetheart." He shrugged. "It plays well. The board sees a girl who picked the winner, and tonight Frank names a boy who can't even keep his woman."

"And if I say no?"

"Your father goes down in the service elevator, and nobody sees him again."

He didn't raise his voice.

"I don't have to say it twice. You know who I am."
