Chapter 24: The Alpha Who Claimed the Spare
At dawn I walked into the Marrow Moot Hall in no veil at all.
Cold Creek stood on the right of the aisle and Ironwood on the left, as they had a year and a day ago.
The doors stood wide to the cold morning, and the light came in low and gold across the stone floor.
Dorran waited by the founder's stone with his hands clasped behind him.
He was the biggest man in the room, and he was looking at me before I was ten steps away.
I stopped ten steps from him and lifted my chin.
"Which daughter?" he asked, very dry, loud enough for every wall.
He knew exactly what he was doing.
A ripple of laughter ran along the Ironwood side, and Keegan wheezed into his sleeve.
"The first one," I said. "The one you bit by mistake."
"I'd say I bit the right one."
"You didn't know it."
"My wolf did."
The hall was quiet, and the air was bright.
I took the last ten steps.
"Dorran Ironwood," I said. "I am Tilda Marrow, firstborn of the old blood and alpha of Cold Creek. I stand here unclaimed, and I ask the alpha of High Ridge to be mine."
"I've been yours since the veil," he said. "Say it, Alpha."
I took his chin in my hand, as he had once taken mine, and tilted his head to the left.
