Chapter 10: The Sister's Choice

"You knew," I said.

Odette stood in the doorway with the quilt around her shoulders and her eyes on the floor.

"Not like that," she whispered. "Not in words."

My mother rose from her chair. "Odette, go back to bed."

"No." For once, Odette didn't look at her. "Linn, can we talk? Just us."

"Absolutely not," my mother said.

"I'll go anywhere you like," Odette said to me, as if my mother weren't there. "I'll leave the door open. Finlay can stand in the hall."

I looked at Finlay.

"Your call," he said. His jaw was tight. "I'll be ten feet away."

We went to Odette's room.

She sat on her bed, and I stayed on my feet by the window.

For a long time she plucked at the fringe of the quilt.

"When I shifted," she said at last, "on my sixteenth birthday, it was the best night of my life. And the worst. Do you know why?"

"No."

"Because it felt like stealing." She raised her eyes. "The wolf came up in me like water in a basin. It was warm and huge and it was glad, and it wasn't mine. I knew it wasn't mine."

"How did you know?"

"Because it dreamed of you."

I flinched.

"Every night, for six years," she said. "A white wolf, running. And the dream always ended with you in the kitchen, with a cup in your hand. I never told anyone. I told myself it was nerves."
