Chapter 18: The Wine

I didn't say a word to anyone.

I walked out of the pantry with the dusty bottle in my hand and my face as calm as I could make it.

Odette was back on her stool by then, peeling, with her bright head bowed.

She didn't look up.

I put the bottle on the counter, and I let my eyes pass over the glass with the ribbon on the stem.

The wine was already in it, dark red, and not a drop of the brown showed.

"Good choice," the old cook said, and I nodded as if I hadn't seen a thing.

That night the courtyard was hung with lamps again, and long tables ran down the middle.

Three hundred wolves sat where they had stood the night before.

This time they were looking at the high table, and at me.

The old cook had found me a gown of dark green, and Finlay, in a black jacket with his bandaged hands bare, kept his eyes on my neck all through the first course.

His mark sat there, and mine sat on him, and half the pack pretended not to notice.

My mother and Odette stood behind the high table with the servers.

They wore gray aprons, and they carried the wine.

Odette came down the line with a tray of glasses, her eyes lowered, her hair tied back.

She set the ribboned glass in front of me with both hands.

"For the Luna," she said softly.

"Thank you, Odette."

She smiled, and went to stand against the wall.
